Is Matcha Better Than Green Tea? What the Science Says

Matcha and green tea come from the same species of plant, Camellia sinensis. That is where the similarity ends.
The plant that produces Master's Reserve is Okumidori, a specific cultivar selected for its compound profile, grown in Wazuka, Kyoto, at altitude, with 21 days of pre-harvest shading, harvested at first flush by hand, stone-milled to 10 microns and consumed whole. Every decision made in producing it is oriented toward one outcome: the highest possible concentration of L-theanine, EGCG and chlorophyll in the finished powder.
Most green tea sold in the UK comes from the opposite end of the spectrum. An undifferentiated cultivar, grown at scale for volume, picked by machine late in the season, with no shade-growing, no organic certification and no attention paid to harvest timing. It is then brewed, which extracts a fraction of the compounds the leaf contains, and the leaf is thrown away.
The comparison between matcha and green tea is therefore two separate arguments made at the same time. It is a comparison between two entirely different standards of cultivation. And it is a comparison between consuming the whole leaf versus extracting a fraction of it and discarding the rest. Both differences point in the same direction.

What the compound difference actually looks like
L-theanine is the amino acid responsible for the calm, alert focus associated with matcha. It is found almost exclusively in tea plants, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and increases alpha brain wave activity. When combined with caffeine, as it is in matcha, L-theanine moderates the rate at which caffeine enters the bloodstream. The result is sustained focus without the spike and crash.
A shade-grown, first flush ceremonial grade matcha delivers significantly more L-theanine per serving than a steeped green tea for two reasons. First, the cultivation method: shade-growing drives L-theanine accumulation in the leaf before harvest, and first flush timing captures the highest concentration of the year. Second, the consumption method: you consume the entire leaf, not a partial extraction of it. Both factors compound each other.
EGCG, the most studied antioxidant catechin in green tea, follows the same logic. Research comparing EGCG content in matcha versus steeped green tea consistently shows matcha delivering substantially higher concentrations per serving. The anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties associated with EGCG in the research literature are measured at concentrations that brewed green tea from a commercial tea bag struggles to consistently deliver at normal serving sizes.
Chlorophyll is barely present in brewed green tea. The majority stays in the leaf and is discarded. In a shade-grown, first flush ceremonial grade matcha, the full chlorophyll content of the leaf is present in every gram of powder. The vivid electric green of a good ceremonial grade matcha is chlorophyll. It does not survive the brewing and discarding process that green tea goes through.
What the research says
Research published comparing matcha and green tea catechin content found that a single serving of matcha contained significantly more EGCG than most commercially available green teas. The whole leaf consumption model is the primary reason. The cultivation quality is the second.
The honest caveat is that most studies use specific, high-quality matcha preparations rather than the full range of products labelled as matcha in the UK market. The results apply most directly to ceremonial grade, properly cultivated, single cultivar matcha. A supermarket matcha powder, regardless of what it says on the label, is unlikely to deliver compound concentrations comparable to what the research measures.
Why the grade still matters within matcha
Even within matcha, not all products deliver these compounds equally. A later-harvest, industrially milled, blended matcha labelled ceremonial grade will have meaningfully lower concentrations of L-theanine, EGCG and chlorophyll than a genuine first flush, shade-grown, single cultivar, organically certified product.
The comparison between matcha and green tea is most meaningful when the matcha is genuinely good. That is not a circular argument. It is a specific claim about what the research supports and what the product needs to be in order to support it.
The answer
Is matcha better than green tea? When the matcha is Master's Reserve, the answer is yes, and the reasons are specific. A cultivar selected for its compound profile. A harvest timed to capture peak L-theanine and EGCG concentrations. Twenty-one days of pre-harvest shading. Stone-milling that preserves the full compound profile. And the entire leaf consumed whole.
When the matcha is a supermarket powder from an undisclosed cultivar, late harvest, industrially milled and blended, the gap narrows considerably. In some cases it disappears.
The quality of the matcha is the answer to the question.
